PostNatural Organism of the Month:

Triploidy Atlantic Salmon

Atlantic Salmon

Triploidy is a naturally occurring genetic deformity in which an organism acquires three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. In many organisms, including humans, this results in embryos that are so severely malformed that they die off in the earliest stages of life. However, among certain fish, including factory-farmed salmon, this results in apparently healthy fish that are sterile and unable to reproduce. Aqua Bounty Farms™ has proposed a system to prevent its transgenic fish from breeding in the wild by exclusively selling batches of embryoes that are 1.) all female, and 2.) subjected to mass-scale induction of the genetic mutation known as triploidy.
